It is the nature of values that they must be internalized to be effective.  A teacher may say, “I value excellence and, therefore, will demand excellence from you,” but that is quite different from saying “All the people in this classroom value excellence and, therefore, we will do excellent work.”  If you wish for your students to adopt the pursuit of excellence as a personal core value, you must be prepared to teach the value.
